For Keeping Your Children Safe

1) Don’t  allow your child to post a blog about his/her daily comings and goings and don’t allow your child to post personal info about him/herself on myspace.com or facebook.com

2) Parents, don’t put a sticker with your child’s name and sports activity on your car.  A stranger would then know your child’s name and where to find him/her after school.

3) Periodically check your child’s buddy list to see with whom he/she is chatting most frequently.  Make sure their buddies are children their age that they  know from school or other activities besides the Internet.

4) Don’t allow your child’s school, church, or youth sports teams to post photos of your child on the Internet.

5) Keep a current head and shoulders photo of your child and know his/her current height and weight and any identifying marks.

6) Check public information websites such as Zabasearch.com and Publicdata.com to see if any information is posted about your family.  If there is, contact the websites to request immediate removal of the data.

7) Know the odds. There’s an Internet war on children.  1 of every 4 children is solicited for sex online, and most children don’t tell their parents when it happens, so start the dialogue before your child is inappropriately contacted online.

8) Save any evidence of inappropriate behavior, such as emails, or photos.  Immediately call your local police department and file a report online at www.cybertipline.com

9) Keep the computer in a main area of your house, not tucked away in your child’s bedroom.  You should always be able to walk by and see what’s on your child’s computer.

10) Know where the sex offenders in your neighborhood live, but remember that not all sex offenders have been caught yet, or register once they have been caught.  Where there are children, there are pedophiles.  Make it as hard as possible for someone to molest your child by being everywhere your child is, and by asking questions.  I have prosecuted umpires, doctors, teachers, and church deacons.  Child molesters look like everyone else does and almost always have legitimate reasons to be with kids.
